The u3a was started with the intention of being a channel for continued learning and personal development for those no longer in full-time employment. It has now developed into an organisation which provides the opportunity, not only for learning but also for friendship, fun, exercise, well-being, broader horizons and mutual support.
Sturminster Newton is located in the heart of the Blackmore Vale, “Tess’s Country” in Thomas Hardy’s Wessex novels, and surrounded by picturesque Dorset countryside

A sense of history is inescapable in Sturminster Newton with windows into the town’s rich and varied heritage nestled in all corners. The working Sturminster Mill tells the story of one thousand years of milling, and the close knit community along the River Stour that grew up around it. The Railway Gardens evoke memories of a bygone era and the historic bridge illustrates how the two parts of the town, Sturminster and Newton, located on either side of the river, came together to form the town we know today.
